The exterior of The White House has lost none of its character. The property, literally, sits on the water’s edge. A few steps lead from the upper floor lead to a private patio decorated with Mediterranean potted plants. A few steps further down and one reaches a common patio that overlooks the property’s private jetty and Kalami Bay.
The Living Space
The White House has four twin bedrooms, all of which open onto a large, open plan, salon/diner.
The large wooden dining table is the one that Lawrence used to consider his desk! French windows from the living area open onto a balcony that hangs over the sea, offering stunning views of Kalami Bay and providing space for al fresco dining.

Many visitors arrive here inspired by his words and relish the opportunity to live in the property in which he spent many his most creative years.
Originally, the White House was a single storey property owned by Anastasios Athinaios, the grandfather of the current owner, Tassos. The second floor was added for Lawrence and his wife.
The ground floor is still the home of the Athinaios family, while the basement level and traditional old fisherman’s hut have been converted into the White House Restaurant.
The upper floor rooms where the Durrells lived and wrote can be rented during the summer season. The White House is also available for rent during the winter, on request. That is normally possible during Christmas and Easter periods. For heating, portable radiators are available.

The White House is one of the most famous buildings on Corfu. It is the former residence of British authors Gerald and Lawrence Durrell, both of whom lived here with their families for long periods of time Lawrence, in his book “Division upon Greek Ground”, described the White House as, “...set like a dice in a rock already venerable with the scars of wind and water.” Of the interior, he wrote, “The rooms look lovely and gracious with their white-washed walls, and the few bright paintings and books. The windows give directly on the sea, so that its perpetual sighing is the rhythm of our work and our sleeping.”
